Toneboosters makes great stuff that covers a lot of the same territory and they're always around $50 each IIRC: Equalizer 4 (very similar to Pro Q 3), Compressor 4 and Barricade 4 are good ones to look into. What sets FabFilter apart is their streamlined approach with easy to use UIs, and a few years ago they were definitely the best around, but, there are tons of developers now that make very good products that will get you 99% of the way to the sound that FF stuff will do, if not better, and for a fraction of the price most of the time. Some of their limiter algorithms (IRC III Clipper and IRC IV Transient) are the best around, in my opinion.

I realize that Izotope stuff can be a CPU hog at times, especially if you only have "Standard" versions and have to load the whole shell to use just one or two of the modules, but all of their stuff is also very high quality. I'll play the devil's advocate here and say that you probably don't need any of them aside from Pro Q 3 (for speed and visual clarity on top of ully interchangeable nodes with left, right, mid, side, and stereo option). I ended up grabbing Timeless after watching the video for that as well, and it wasn’t even on my radar. Though I’m trying to learn some of these more advanced functions, they can really help set your stuff apart. Man, FF plugins have a depth that I think is lost on most people, even those that use it. From subtle harmonics to drastic sound design uses. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks playing with it and I can’t get over how many potential uses it has. I don’t have FF’s Pro MB, largely because I have their EQ which has dynamic EQ, which meets my multi and compression needs for the time being. I’m not even really saying this to you but to the one or two other people that might see this paragraph and get something out of it.
#FABFILTER SATURN AS CHANNEL STRIP UPGRADE#
If they’re using Logic they’re usually better off sticking with the stock comp until they learn the ins and outs of each and want to truly upgrade rather than grab something from a paid product that isn’t going to necessarily be better by default. People starting out think they automatically need an emulation for each of the major comp types / major models. Logic’s comp is practically a secret weapon.
